Anyone remember this post from back in October? Well, I’ve decided I’d love to discuss the topic further.
I’m no stranger to mental health issues – and I’m not scared to talk about it. To put it simply, I’ve been through a lot of crap surrounding anxiety, and I’ve definitely seen issues like mine in YA.
In my first Mental Health in YA post, I went into a lot of detail about the subject. Today’s post will be a little shorter, and I’ll be focusing on a specific part of mental health.
How do we cope with mental health issues, and is this reflected in YA?
So, the backstory. Basically, I went through a bit of an emotional time earlier this year, and I had a really tough couple of weeks. I went to see my college counselor, and I was recommended to have counseling to help me get over the situation. Well, as it turns out, all of the appointments I was offered I actually couldn’t make for various reasons. Then yesterday, I got an offer for a appointment I could make. And I turned it down.
Why? Part of it is that I actually feel okay at the moment. Yeah, it was hard at first, but I’ve been able to manage my situation and feel as though I’m moving forward. I’d also quite like to be able to cope on my own, but that’s just me, personally.
Does this mean I think it’s bad to ask for help?
NO! Not at all! Last summer, I went through a lot of college related anxiety, and I did ask for help. I worked with a counselor throughout the summer and without her there is absolutely no way I would be where I am now. There should be absolutely no shame in asking for help and you should at any age in any situation.
But in the end, we’re all different as people and so are characters in YA! Let’s take Vivi from When We Collided, for example. She has a summer of saying a big screw you to the pills she’s been taking, and it helps her to let go of her past and move on.
But then we have the lovely Libby from Holding Up the Universe. She works very closely with her counselor and has a great relationship with her. She cherishes their time together and it helps her greatly.
The thing is – there are Libby’s and Vivi’s in this world. Some of us need help, and some of us feel like we can get through things on our own. I just so happen to be a bit of both.
Whoever you are and whatever your situation – it’s okay to ask for help. And it’s okay to use the love of your family and friends to work through things yourself.
