No one ever tells you that best friends breaking up hurts just as much as a relationship breaking up. If anything is underrepresented in YA, friendship stories are. Time and time again, we hear about romance. What about the other type of relationship – the relationship between best friends?
“But people we love come and go, Caddy. That
doesn’t mean we loved them any less at the time.”

Yes. Yes, we do hear too much about romance. No argument from me there. -_-
But just like mediocre couples in YA, ex-best friends can always get back together in the end if things work out just right! 😉

So true – I wish there was more about friendship in YA! It’s so important.

I just wish there was less romance. Everything seems to take a backseat to romance. Friendship, family, everything. Even in stories about something else, there’s inevitably some kind of romance shoehorned in.
What happened to all the people who aren’t looking for relationships?!

Sadly, publishing companies kind of force authors to put a lot of romance in. I’ve heard a bunch of aspiring authors complain about this. It’s this vicious cycle that just…ughhh. -_-

I can’t actually remember where I found the link, sadly. I tried searching for it on Google, but I got nothing.
I might try going to the place I know I found the link in the first place, but that could take a while…

This is so true! There’s a beatiful quote by Hayoa Miyazaki (Legend Director of Studio Gibli films) where he says:
“I have become skeptical of the unwritten rule that just because a girl and a boy appear in the same feature, a romance must ensue. Rather I want to portray a slightly different relationship, one where the two mutually inspire each other to live – if I’m able to, the perhaps I’ll be closer to portraying a true expression of love.”
Why can’t we have more stories like this? It would be so much more appetising and interesting. Something different for a change.

That is such a beautiful quote from an incredible director! And very true – I wish we could have more stories like that.

Yes so true. I was really unprepared when I good friend of mine actually broke up with me. It was very hurtful and I really didn’t know how to deal with it. In retrospect I can see why she did it and how our personalities clashed a bit and so it was probably for the best. In some ways it’s a really bold and brave move to end a friendship that’s no working.. but man I don’t think I’d have the guts. I prefer for things to just fade naturally as they usually do in life. Good quote.

I went through a similar situation in the summer. Both me and my friend were struggling and it wasn’t working…but unfortunately is was a difficult and messy break that haunted me for months afterwards. But it has definitely been for the best – it sometimes just takes a while to realise it!
Thank you 🙂
