I know I’m on a book buying ban…but no one should go to Oxford while they’re on a book buying ban! As you may have seen on my blog the other day, while I was away last weekend I visited a lot of bookshops in Oxford. As we walked into town on Friday, the first thing I spotted was a Waterstones, where I bought a Hufflepuff pin because I’m only banned from buying books!
But as we wandered between different bookshops, I found something else. Hidden between other second-hand books, this hardback edition of great expectations was only £3.50! I have a set of Jane Austen books that are worth a fortune, and I knew that I just had to buy this one for such a cheap price.
Pip doesn’t expect much from life…His sister makes it clear that her orphaned little brother is nothing but a burden on her. But suddenly things begin to change. Pip’s narrow existence is blown apart when he finds an escaped criminal, is summoned to visit a mysterious old woman and meets the icy beauty Estella. Most astoundingly of all, an anonymous person gives him money to begin a new life in London.
Are these events as random as they seem? Or does Pip’s fate hang on a series of coincidences he could never have expected?
