Top 5 Books That Intimidate Me

This Top 5 Wednesday series is inspired by the weekly meme on Goodreads which you can find here. I no longer follow the topics and instead use my own.

Hi all! I’ve decided today to look at the top 5 books on my physical TBR that intimidate me. Of course I’m excited for all of the books on my TBR, but that doesn’t mean they also scare me too. I’m usually intimidated by books I think I might not like as much as I want to, or just look so big they scare me off!

The House of Berethnet has ruled Inys for a thousand years. Still unwed, Queen Sabran the Ninth must conceive a daughter to protect her realm from destruction—but assassins are getting closer to her door.
Ead Duryan is an outsider at court. Though she has risen to the position of lady-in-waiting, she is loyal to a hidden society of mages. Ead keeps a watchful eye on Sabran, secretly protecting her with forbidden magic.
Across the dark sea, Tané has trained all her life to be a dragonrider, but is forced to make a choice that could see her life unravel.
Meanwhile, the divided East and West refuse to parley, and forces of chaos are rising from their sleep.

I’ve heard nothing but good about this book, and I’m fairly sure I’ll enjoy it. But come on, that is a commitment and a half.

A boy drowns, desperate and alone in his final moments. He dies. Then he wakes, naked and bruised and thirsty, but alive. How can this be? And what is this strange deserted place?
As he struggles to understand what is happening, the boy dares to hope. Might this not be the end? Might there be more to this life, or perhaps this afterlife?

I’ve always found Patrick Ness very hit and miss, and I think that’s why I’m daunted by this one. I really need to get to it soon though as it’s been on my TBR for such a long time!

WHEN BEAUFORT SWAN MOVES TO THE gloomy town of Forks and meets the mysterious, alluring Edythe Cullen, his life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. With her porcelain skin, golden eyes, mesmerizing voice, and supernatural gifts, Edythe is both irresistible and enigmatic.
WHAT BEAU DOESN’T REALIZE IS THE closer he gets to her, the more he is putting himself and those around him at risk. And, it might be too late to turn back…

I picked this up cheap pretty much when it came out. And yet I still haven’t read it! I think it’s because this book is actually twice as long as it looks – I only need to read Life and Death.

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkeness bind them
In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, The Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell into the hands of Bilbo Baggins, as told in The Hobbit.
In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.

I know so many people who love these books, and I myself love the movies. But all I’ve heard is that they’re so hard to get through and I’m so intimidated by them!

In the dark, filthy salt mines of Endovier, an eighteen-year-old girl is serving a life sentence. She is a trained assassin, the best of her kind, but she made a fatal mistake. She got caught.
Young Captain Westfall offers her a deal: her freedom in return for one huge sacrifice. Celaena must represent the prince in a to-the-death tournament—fighting the most gifted thieves and assassins in the land. Live or die, Celaena will be free. Win or lose, she is about to discover her true destiny. But will her assassin’s heart be melted
.

I have no doubts I will love this series. I adored A Court of Thorns and Roses so much! But that series took me long enough to get through, and I just know that when I start Throne of Glass, it will be a massive commitment.

Top 5 Books On My TBR the Longest

This Top 5 Wednesday series is inspired by the weekly meme on Goodreads which you can find here. I no longer follow the topics and instead use my own.

Hi all! Who else has an endless TBR? I went on a book ban for a few months over Christmas/New Year and yet I still have 67 physical books on my TBR. I’m blaming it all on YALC at the moment as I’ve been stocking up books for then and adding books I want to read before YALC to my TBR. I’m currently reading Girls of Paper and Fire before I’m able to meet Natasha Ngan at YALC, and I’m really enjoying it so far!

Today’s topic is books that have been on my TBR the longest. I definitely have a lot to choose from here!

When the lift cranks open, the only thing Thomas remembers is his first name. But he’s not alone – an army of boys welcomes him to the Glade, an encampment at the centre of a terrible maze. The Gladers have no idea why they’re there, or what’s happened to the world outside. All they know is that every morning when the walls slide back, they will risk everything to find out.

I really have no excuse for not reading this series yet. I may have only had the books myself for the past year or so, but my brother has had the set since the first movie came out!

Beatrice Prior is on the brink of a decision that will change her life. In a society divided into factions all are forced to choose where they belong. And the choice Tris makes shocks everyone, including herself.
Once decisions are made, the new members are forced to undergo extreme initiation tests with devastating consequences. As their experience transforms them, Tris must determine who her friends are – and if the man who both threatens and protects her is really on her side.
Because Tris has a deadly secret. And as growing conflict threatens to unravel their seemingly perfect society, this secret might save those Tris loves… or it might destroy her.

My boyfriend picked this series up almost 2 years ago so we could both read it. He’s read the first one but I haven’t managed to get to them yet even though we’ve watched all of the films!

Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
It can.
She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.
There is.
She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.
She’s wrong.

I picked this series up second hand years ago (I can’t even remember how many years ago it would have been), yet I still haven’t picked them up! I guess it’s because I used to find it daunting to read series, but now I pick them up a lot more.

A sharpshooter. A dreamer. A damn good liar.
Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mythical beasts still roam the wild and remote areas, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinn still perform their magic. For humans, it s an unforgiving place, especially if you re poor, orphaned, or female.
Amani Al Hiza is all three. She s a gifted gunslinger with perfect aim, but she can t shoot her way out of Dustwalk, the back-country town where she s destined to wind up wed or dead. Then she meets Jin, a rakish foreigner, in a shooting contest, and sees him as the perfect escape route. But though she s spent years dreaming of leaving Dustwalk, she never imagined she d gallop away on a mythical horse or that it would take a foreign fugitive to show her the heart of the desert she thought she knew.

I actually started this book when it came out and couldn’t get into it. Then when the second and third came out, I saw signed editions and couldn’t resist picking them up! Now I read a lot more fantasy, I’m sure I’ll enjoy them when I give them another go.

Noemi is a young and fearless soldier of Genesis, a colony planet of a dying Earth. But the citizens of Genesis are rising up – they know that Earth’s settlers will only destroy this planet the way they destroyed their own. And so a terrible war has begun.
When Noemi meets Abel, one of Earth’s robotic mech warriors, she realizes that Abel himself may provide the key to Genesis’ salvation. Abel is bound by his programming to obey her – even though her plan could result in his destruction. But Abel is no ordinary mech. He’s a unique prototype, one with greater intelligence, skill and strength than any other. More than that, he has begun to develop emotions, a personality and even dreams. Noemi begins to realise that if Abel is less than human, he is more than a machine. If she destroys him, is it murder? And can a cold-blooded murder be redeemed by the protection of a world?
Stranded together in space, they go on a whirlwind adventure through Earth’s various colony worlds, alongside the countless Vagabonds who have given up planetary life altogether and sail forever between the stars. Each step brings them closer – both to each other and to the terrible decision Noemi will have to make about her world’s fate, and Abel’s.

This book is probably the worst on this list, because it came out over 2 years ago and I have an ARC. God knows what got in the way 2 years ago, but I definitely have to read this soon!

Top 5 Series I Want to Read This Year

I’ve been following T5W for a long time now and I’ve really enjoyed it. However, I’ve been finding it hard to follow topics lately, and they’ve been going up later and later each month. So I’m going to branch out and do my own top 5 lists, inspired by the T5W group. This is partly due to Sam, the moderator, going on a break for the summer! I may join again in September when she comes back, but today I’m doing my own topic – series I want to read by the end of the year.

Ideally, I would love to finish these series, but that’s probably a little optimistic 😛 So I’ll include series I want to finish too!

I read The Next Together years ago and Lauren James quickly became one of my favourite authors. The second instalment, The Last Beginning, is now the only book of hers I haven’t read!

I really enjoyed Caraval, but I had mixed feelings about Legendary. I’m still super excited to pick up Finale though!

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is the story of Lara Jean, who has never openly admitted her crushes, but instead wrote each boy a letter about how she felt, sealed it, and hid it in a box under her bed. But one day Lara Jean discovers that somehow her secret box of letters has been mailed, causing all her crushes from her past to confront her about the letters: her first kiss, the boy from summer camp, even her sister’s ex-boyfriend, Josh. As she learns to deal with her past loves face to face, Lara Jean discovers that something good may come out of these letters after all.

I actually read the first book of this series a long time ago, but never carried on. After really loving the movie, I decided to pick up the beautiful hardback set I’ve wanted for so long, so I can re-read the first book and continue with the series.

Romance was not part of Nora Grey’s plan. She’s never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how hard her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Patch draws Nora to him against her better judgement.
But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora’s not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is and seems to know more about her than her closest friends. She can’t decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
For she is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen – and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost Nora her life.

I’ve had the first 3 books in this series for ages, as I managed to pick them up second hand. The only reason I haven’t gotten around to them yet is because I didn’t have the final book, but I just ordered it yesterday to complete my set! As my lovely friend Courtney enjoyed them, I’m sure I will too.

Because Tris has a deadly secret. And as growing conflict threatens to unravel their seemingly perfect society, this secret might save those Tris loves… or it might destroy her.

It might be a little ambitious to try and read this series by the end of the year alongside all of these and my YALC TBR, but I’d love to try, as I’m so late to the party with them and I’ve watched all of the movies!

Which series would you like to read/finish before the end of 2019?

T5W: Books That Discuss Mental Health Issues

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Lainey. You get a new topic every Wednesday, and you list your Top 5 books related to that topic. If you’d like to take part, join the Goodreads group, and add your name to the list of bloggers & booktubers!

Hi all! It’s mental health awareness month this month, and we’re sharing books that discuss mental health issues. I appreciate these books so much and I’m excited to share some below.

I know that mental health is very subjective and I’m not saying everyone will be able to relate to these stories – everyone relates to books differently, these are just some that I personally loved.

On the anniversary of her daredevil brother’s death, Jaycee attempts to break into Jake’s favorite hideout—the petrifying ruins of an insane asylum. Joined by four classmates, each with their own brand of dysfunction, Jaycee discovers a map detailing her brother’s exploration and the unfinished dares he left behind.
As a tribute to Jake, Jaycee vows to complete the dares, no matter how terrifying or dangerous. What she doesn’t bargain on is her eccentric band of friends who challenge her to do the unthinkable: reveal the parts of herself that she buried with her brother.

This is by far the most underrated book on this list, and I absolutely loved it. It deals with grief so well, and also includes real journeys around abandoned buildings!

Audrey can’t leave the house. she can’t even take off her dark glasses inside the house.
Then her brother’s friend Linus stumbles into her life. With his friendly, orange-slice smile and his funny notes, he starts to entice Audrey out again – well, Starbucks is a start. And with Linus at her side, Audrey feels like she can do the things she’d thought were too scary. Suddenly, finding her way back to the real world seems achievable.

Who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school. Again.
Because sometimes there are problems bigger than this week’s end of the world, and sometimes you just have to find the extraordinary in your ordinary life.
Even if your best friend is worshipped by mountain lions…

With the deadline getting closer, something starts to grow between Aysel and Roman – a feeling she never thought she would experience. It seems there might be something to live for, after all – but is Aysel in so deep she can’t turn back?

Wealthy cannibals who dine on the discarded limbs of peculiars. A fork-tongued princess. The origins of the first ymbryne. These are but a few of the truly brilliant stories in Tales of the Peculiar—known to hide information about the peculiar world—first introduced by Ransom Riggs in his Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series.
Riggs now invites you to share his secrets of peculiar history, with a collection of original stories, as collected and annotated by Millard Nullings, ward of Miss Peregrine and scholar of all things peculiar.

I really enjoyed the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children series, and this short story collection took me back to the world I loved.

Seventeen-year-old Rukhsana Ali tries her hardest to live up to her conservative Muslim parents’ expectations, but lately she’s finding that harder and harder to do. She rolls her eyes instead of screaming when they blatantly favor her brother and she dresses conservatively at home, saving her crop tops and makeup for parties her parents don’t know about. Luckily, only a few more months stand between her carefully monitored life in Seattle and her new life at Caltech, where she can pursue her dream of becoming an engineer.
But when her parents catch her kissing her girlfriend Ariana, all of Rukhsana’s plans fall apart. Her parents are devastated; being gay may as well be a death sentence in the Bengali community. They immediately whisk Rukhsana off to Bangladesh, where she is thrown headfirst into a world of arranged marriages and tradition. Only through reading her grandmother’s old diary is Rukhsana able to gain some much needed perspective.
Rukhsana realizes she must find the courage to fight for her love, but can she do so without losing everyone and everything in her life?

This is the only book on my list that I haven’t read yet! But it’s on my YALC TBR and I’m super excited for it.

Hi readers! Today’s T5W celebrates Mother’s Day in the US, which is a little weird for me as we had Mother’s Day back in March in the UK. However, I’m all for talking about the mum’s I love in YA/literature, although none will be as loving and awesome as my own mum, of course :p

The uneasy balance between them is shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend, Khalil, by a police officer. Drawn ever deeper into their world, she finds herself fascinated by — and torn between — two best friends and quickly realizes that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

This is the year that she will be drawn into the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys. And the year Blue will discover that magic does exist.

Although Blue’s mum is awesome, so are her aunties! So this one is for all the brilliant females we have in The Raven Boys.
